A true hidden gem. Genuine mom and pop, no frills homemade meals and old fashioned hand tossed pizza. Everything is good. Best hand rolled meatballs, Alfredo sauce is from scratch, the club salads are bomb, the seafood dishes are the best you can find around here and the sandwich combo is a great lunch deal. We had frequented the location of Pleasant Valley Road where they always seemed to have service issues. The food was always good however especially the lunch special which is an individual pizza with salad. This is also available in their latest location. This location is smaller and to me seemed less inviting. Unfortunately it is further away and off the beaten path so we most likely won't visit as often. On Monday, September 23, 2013 I had lunch at Castiglia's Italian Eatery at 212 Grocery Avenue in the Food Lion Shopping Center at Senseny and Greenwood Roads, east of Winchester. Although it had announced in an advertising circular that Castiglia's had closed its location at 2100 South Pleasant Valley Road and moved to this address, there was no new signage and it was still called Pizza Amore, which had been in operation almost a year.

I entered and asked the server if it was really Castiglia's now, and was told that it was. The place is open every day at 11:00 AM; it closes at 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, and at 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. It offers Dine In, Take Out, and Delivery service. The telephone numbers are (540) 722-6084, formerly used at Pleasant Valley Road, and (540) 723-4650, originally used for Pizza Amore.

As you enter the restaurant from the parking lot you see tables along the left wall, with tables for eight in front right at the door. Beyond these are tables for six, with tables for four all the way back. The right wall is brick, dating back to a previous occupancy by a Brick House Pizzeria. More tables are here also, along with a refrigerated display case for desserts. Further back is a service counter for the use of the staff. There are no booths.

I took a seat and looked over the menu, which still bore the Pizza Amore label. I was told that the menu items were the same as those formerly available on Pleasant Valley Road. Its main headings are Appetizers, Salads, Hot Soups, Vegetables, Kid's Menu, Lunch Menu, Dinner Entrees, Chicken, Veal, Eggplant, Seafood, Baked Dishes, Low-Carb Menu, Dolci, Hot Subs and Wraps, Cold Subs and Wraps, Steaks and Burgers, Oven Baked Specialties, Pizza, Gourmet Pizza, Catering Menu, Sandwiches, and Drinks. Dinner items can be ordered for lunch.

I noted that the Gourmet Pizza Menu included Margherita Pizza, which should be available at any Italian restaurant worthy of the name. I'll try it on a future visit, but decided to order Eggplant Parmigiana for my test entree, with pink lemonade as my drink. All dinner entrees are served with a house salad, which had cucumbers, black and green olives, a grape tomato, julienne carrots, and green leaf lettuce. Two small slices of Italian bread were also served.

The entree was served on a large oval ceramic platter. It had a generous serving of eggplant topped with melted cheese and an equally generous serving of spaghetti topped with sauce. The eggplant was very good, and was all I could eat. On the waitress's next visit I asked for a go-box, because the pasta alone was enough for a meal at home later. I'm a slow eater, and wished that the platter had been heated to keep the eggplant from cooling; Mexican restaurants manage to keep their meals warm in this manner.

This location was a Brick House Pizzeria in July 2010 and became Pizza Amore in October of 2012, an offshoot of Castiglia's on Pleasant Valley Road. Apparently at an earlier time a coffee shop here was called Bean There Done That, but I have been unable to find any further information about that incarnation; it apparently was under my radar at the time. Castiglia's is one of three restaurants in this building; it is at one end, next to a Subway, and the Mimosa Asian Fusion Restaurant is at the other end. This shopping center also has a McDonald's facing Senseny Road.

I heard good things about this restaurant, so my husband and I decided to try it out. We were seated right away, however the table smelled like wet dirty wet rag, a total turn off! We placed our order with our waitress, then another waitress came over and asked what we would like to order. We told her we already gave our waitress our order. The music was the local radio station, when the signal came in, most of the time we were there it was static that were we listening to. The décor is dated, from the 80's, need to get rid of those fake ivy plants that are collecting dust! Then another waitress came to our table with food that was not ours. When we finally did get our food, I was disappointed. My husband ordered spaghetti and meatballs and there were only 2 small meatballs. I ordered fettuccini alfredo and it tasted like it was made with carnation milk, instead of the buttery, creamy sauce. It was also a very small portion for $10.95! Overpriced. We were also supposed to get with our meal garlic bread and our waitress forgot until we reminded her. Our waitress also did not come over after our meal was served to see if everything was ok. Very unorganized, a lot of confusion and I hope that this feedback is used to improve their service otherwise we will have another restaurant in town go out of business. :( — Anonymous Reviewer

AMAZING!!! My Italian family and I were there from out of town for my mother's birthday. Our drinks, salads, and garlic bread came out on time and the main dishes were 5-stars. My mother had a Ziti Pescatore and I had Veal Marsala.... Delicious! Our server was friendly and always attentive with smiles. The owner and the staff even came to sing happy birthday to her! Don't know about some of these poor reviews... someone is always looking for the worst and then they're surprised when they get it! Never had a problem with the food quality, cleanliness or service. Never, ever had a "wilted" salad. The food compares with restaurants costing 2-3 times the price of Castiglia's. Try it yourself. — Anonymous Reviewer

I was visiting a friend in Winchester recently, and we went to Castiglias to have dinner. From the time that I walked in I noticed that the place was not very clean. I know that the place is old so I ignored it. We waited to be seated for about 5 minutes, finally when the server came to seat us all I could smell was cigarette smoke! I was a little turned off at this point but still hungry.I got the lasagna, when my salad got there it was wilted and brown! I didn't even take a bite and the server never asked what the problem was. When my entree came out the cheese was burnt! I tried to eat it because I was so hungry at this point, but the inside was cold and the outside was burnt. Still the server didnt even ask how the food was! I will say, my friend and I wont be coming back to this place ever again! Bad service and worse food! — Anonymous Reviewer

Had lunch at Castiglias. Waited quite a bit of time to be seated while servers and others walked by us without ever saying a word. was about to walk out when finally seated. Had to ask twice for my beverage then no refills. When time came to pay the bill our server disappeared for about ten minutes with my credit card and i had to ask another employee to track her down. This was a late lunch and only one other table seated at the time. Not an issue of being busy. our server just didn't seem to want to be "bothered" with us. very poor service. By far the most accommodating and succulent restaurant in Winchester. I moved to Winchester three years ago and only ate at the restraunts in old town as I imagined thats where the good food would be. I must admit I've never been much impressed with that area, so I expanded outward. I've only been going to Castiglia's for a few months now but it has quickly become my favorite spot in town. Once you come back two or three times the waitstaff knows you personally and treats you like you were over at their house. Victor (the owner) can always make time to say hello and when they are not busy he'll even make you something thats not on the menu! The only thing I've had even close to a bad experience is when they are really busy and the servers have trouble getting to the tables, but I used to wait in college so I understand completely. Had dinner tonight with my best friend. VERY disappointing, as I'd been told some years back that this was the best Italian in Winchester. Either they've changed hands, or the friend didn't know good Italian!

We both ordered lasagna, my friend the meat, and me the vegetarian. My salad arrived with brown iceberg lettuce, and the vegetarian lasagna was inedible. The main flavor was salty carrots. Yuck.

My friend's meat lasagna had a good flavor, but bore no resemblance to "lasagna" as I've ever had it. No layers could be distinguished, and it seemed to have sour cream in it instead of ricotta cheese. Very strange, but pretty good, once you got over the shock of this as "lasagna".

The mozzarella sticks were ok (clearly from a frozen box, not fresh made), and the garlic bread was tasty, though low quality "air bread".

All in all, not an experience I care to repeat, and I don't recommend this place to anyone I know.
