On Monday, September 9, 2013, I had dinner at the Texas Steak House and Saloon at 120 Front Royal Pike, near the Route 50 exit for I-81. It had been quite a few years since I had eaten there, but this time two of my daughters took me there to celebrate my 93rd birthday.

The Steak House is open every day at 11:00 AM, and closes at 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and at 11:00 PM Friday and Saturday. When you enter the restaurant, a dining area has booths along the wall and booths along the long side wall and across from them are booths and tables.

Elsewhere the dining space is divided up into several sections by head-high partitions. A row of booths is along the wall in the back. Across from them, along the partition down the middle of the room, are tables. Another area has high-rise tables and chairs along the partition opposite the bar, which has high-rise stools and two TV screens.

Still another wall has a couple of booths near the kitchen and tables in a small nook. Finding your way around can be a little confusing because of the dining room divisions. The general theme is cow-country decorations.

The dinner menu's categories are Starters, Soups and Salads, Chicken, Western Dishes, The Best of the Border, Seafood Favorites, Seafood, Border Favorites, Chargrilled Steaks, Side Kicks, Gourmet Burgers, Sandwiches, Beverages, The Winery, The Brewery, and Desserts.

We each ordered the six-ounce filet from the Steaks menu. My side choices were sauteed mushrooms and seasoned asparagus, with lemonade as my beverage. We were all satisfied with our steaks, which were tender and properly cooked.

The kitchen erred with my sides order, and sent me broccoli instead of the seasoned asparagus I had requested. I pointed this out to our server, who brought me an order of asparagus a few minutes later. I thought that this was something he should have checked it before he left the kitchen.

The meal was good enough for me to put the Texas Steakhouse and Saloon back on my Keep list of area steak houses. I had stopped going there a long time ago because of dissatisfaction with the service and food.

Had an early dinner here on Friday and we were able to beat the PM rush. We were seated quickly and our server was very friendly (two of my kids gave her a hug). I had the super chicken club - it was large and tasty however, it could have used more dressing or maybe a side of ranch because it was a little dry. I also had a wedge salad that was great. My wife had the marshall dillon steak and while she ordered it med. rare, it came out a bit over cooked for her likes and was more of a med well. Service was fast, maybe the fastest I've ever seen at Texas. Overall a good experience. — Anonymous Reviewer

Texas has gotten much better in recent years...3-4 years ago, I wouldn't even consider it. Much better now! — Anonymous Reviewer

We were not happy with this establishment. The wait staff was slow, the food was tasteless and the price for what we ordered was rather high. Needless to say we won't be returning. — Anonymous Reviewer

I wish "0" stars was an option.... My 7 yr old son, mother, and I went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived well before the dinner rush. My son ordered the kids rib basket, My mother got the grilled chicken sandwich, and I got a prime rib. We sat at the table for 15 before the server came to get our drinks, another 15 to take our food order. We then waited an hour before our server came to check on us. We asked why was it taking so long for our food, she stated it was b/c I had a well done prime rib (Still doesn't take an hour). 5 min later someone else brought our food. The prime rib was RAW!!!!! It was still bleeding, and cold in the middle! It had so much fat on it, curled up around the little piece of meat it had, that it looked like a brain. It was disgusting. My mom's sandwich was hard as a rock from sitting under the heat lamp. We waited and hour and a half for THAT. We asked for the manager 3x, and he never showed up. We weren't rude at all, actually we were very polite. Needless to say, we got it free. Which we should have, b/c nobody ate. Instead we ended up eating chicken fingers from Target. And that was better. — Anonymous Reviewer

Best in town in my book. I will agree with the others on the filet. It is good and that is what I usually order. This place is better than Outback and has more tast to the meat than Outback will ever have. Lunch is good too. — Anonymous Reviewer
