Food seems to be "off" lately, as we have always enjoyed our meals. Last night, we both had catfish but it was just a roll of hard crispy deep-fried batter...in fact, it left a couple abrasions in my mouth. Pinto beans side dish seems to have evolved to "pulled pork with a few beans". — Anonymous Reviewer

I wanted to put my 2 cents in here. I've only experienced the MSV food during fundraising events. I have not been disappointed there. The food at the Amherst/Boscowen Location has been consistently good. I really like this place. I love the Dixie Pig, if I'm feeling really indulgent. I do not love the Mac and cheese. The cole slaw is good. The shrimp and grits are consistently good. I think they need more veggies (unadulterated) for those who are so inclined. The food is sometimes amazing and sometimes not-so-much.the pastry items have improved since the opening. — Ovidagrl

I tried this place for lunch today. I ordered the crab cake special which came with 2 sides. I elected mac and cheese and cole slaw. I received a crab cake and two pieces of Texas toast and about 3 tablespoons of each side for a whooping $17.43. To be fair I also got a water. The crab cake was awful. It was very red in color and tasted of browned or burnt butter. There was no set up i.e. lettuce, tomato, onion. It was inedible. The portion with respect to the sides was so small I was left very hungry after spending nearly 20 bucks on lunch. The mac and cheese was good and the cole slaw was okay. I can not recommend this place. — Georgie Girl

I've eaten here at both locations. Twice when I've eaten at the MSV, the food was very good and enjoyable. Two of the four times that I've eaten at the Amherst location, the food was very good (5 rating). The other times it was very disappointing (1 rating). I hope that they could get some consistency in the quality of the food and atmosphere at the Amherst location since the other place has very limited hours. — Anonymous Reviewer

Heard this place was covered in Southern Living magazine so I thought it would be a no brainer. Sadly mistaken. I know my BBQ as I am from NC, yes, it's a bit different down here, but we don't include fat, bone and gristle in our BBQ. The slaw was tart and nothing special. Mac and cheese was not warm and had no taste. Overpriced, unhelpful workers, and WAY over rated. — Anonymous Reviewer

Finally tried Bonnie Blue today. Decided to order carryout and had the family special that consisted of a pint of pulled pork, a pint of pulled brisket, rolls and sides included greens and pinto beans. Both the pork and brisket were pretty good; however, I may have expected it to be better based on the rave reviews. The good news is this is the best BBQ in Winchester. I'm a fan of traditional smoked BBQ and Bonnie Blue gets it right. My wife thought the brisket was gross but liked the pork. The pinto beans had a little spicy kick but needed to be cooked a little longer as there was a little crunch in the beans. I really enjoyed the greens but my wife said it was disgusting. Rolls were big but very dry. Probably should have ordered the biscuits instead. My '3' rating is based on the combined scores for me and my wife. I would have given this a 4 star but she didn't care for the food, except for the pork, and gave a 2 rating. If you like smoked BBQ, this place will satisfy your need until you go to Memphis. — Anonymous Reviewer

The coffee is above average there but I have to admit I am somewhat of a coffee snob so I have high expectations. The baked goods there are pretty good, but the regular food I have not been pleased with. I found some bones in my chicken salad, the barbeque sauce was like ketchup. The shrimp and grits I had were runny and flavorless. None of it was impressive and some of it was kinda nasty. I would say stick to the coffee and baked goods also it is a bit pricey for what you get there. Bummer! — Anonymous Reviewer

I heard from my husband that this place was excellent. I decided to stop in for lunch. I did like the atmosphere in the place and the selection of local Virginia products. However, for a lunch place they did not have any salads, or anything besides sandwiches. I normally try to stay away from white flour and their bread choice were a croissant or a white roll. I ended up just getting a side of chicken salad and requested a tomato to eat it on. Well, it looked tasty enough, until I bit into it and started chewing. In this tiny pint of chicken salad I found 3 different shards of bone and cartilage. It was barely edible, but I felt embarrassed and didn't mention it to the staff (which I should have). Yuck! Not sure I would eat here again... maybe I will try the coffee. — Anonymous Reviewer

Food is ok. I have to say that it looks like they smoke everything there and cook everything there out in plain site, which is a plus nowadays, but I found this place a little pricey for what it is. I have eaten here a few times, and have not found anything that I have to come back for. Really giving this place more chances due to such good reviews, but have not found that special something yet and i did mention the pricey part. — Anonymous Reviewer

To be honest, I have not had anything there except the croissants. And they are excellent. As good as any I have had anywhere in Europe. French press coffee-a very nice touch! — Anonymous Reviewer
